Vale of York School Work Experience Week

Year 9 students from the Vale of York High School have participated in a week’s work experience with Springfield Healthcare.

Led by Tracey Hopkinson, head of the Youth Academy, these students were given a week’s insight into life working in the health and social care sector.

The aim of our Youth Academy is to educate young people about the opportunities and career pathways available within a health and social care setting, as well as teaching them valuable and transferable skills that they will carry with them throughout the rest of their careers.

The students have been tasked with a project to develop throughout their week. In teams, they are to design a room within a  home that is accessible for an adult with disabilities. To end their week with us, the winning team of students are to be presented with a prize for their project.

To aid in their task, the students visited Chocolate Works Care Village on Wednesday 5th June. They were able to take a tour round the care village, meet our residents and witness the different roles that are paramount to the functioning of our homes.

The students were also given an insight into the work of various departments within Springfield. Mini presentations were given by the marketing team, finance, our home manager and senior care assistants, all of whom shared their experiences of working within the sector.

Mr Martin, teacher at the Vale of York High School, told us that ‘it has been very eye opening to see the Care Village. It’s been brilliant to be here and to allow our students to come see it. I think they have gotten a lot out of it, even more so than they expected’.

One student commented that the ‘people who live here are very lucky because the surroundings are so beautiful’.

Another student expressed that she ‘would really love to work here’. According to Tracey, ‘my job here is done because I have inspired someone to come into health and social care. I am happy. On Monday, she had no idea what she would like to do, and now she wants to work here!’

We are so pleased that these students have finished this week with more knowledge of what it is like to work in healthcare. This is just another example of the great work of the Springfield Youth Academy!
