Eurico’s been cooking

Seacroft Green resident, Eurico, has a passion for cooking. His true passion is cooking for others; he cooks for everyone, both staff and residents, and he gets so much joy from it. So much so, that our team created a kitchen on the community just for Eurico!! He spends almost every day in his kitchen cooking a variety of different foods, adapting recipes and trying new ones, always making sure to cook something that others will enjoy. This includes vegetarian meals, cultural meals and a good spread when it is someone’s birthday!

Eurico said “In 2003, I was 33 and my mum had very recently passed away. Very soon after, I opened my first restaurant, which I named after my mum, Rosa’s Kitchen. At the time, I was desperate to get out of the house and do something for her.”

Eurico’s mother was Portuguese, and elements of Portuguese culture can always be found in his food; his specialty meal is a homemade ‘Nando’s chicken’. He puts so much love and care into his cooking and this brings everyone around him so much happiness.

Activities Assistant, Libby Howarth, spoke with Eurico whilst he made his popular Zimbabwean Chicken Curry. Libby chatted to him about his amazing passion for cooking. Eurico said “I used to make this curry back home in Zimbabwe. It is very tasty and very easy to make. The trick to making a good curry is to always fry the dry spices with the onions first – give the pot some lovin’! To prevent any burning, and to bring out the amazing flavour of the spices, you should always use a bit of hot water when frying.”

Libby said “I, and many other members of staff, learn so much from Eurico when he is cooking. He is concise and clear with each step and he very clearly has so much fun with it. His knowledge of herbs and spices is amazing, and the beautiful smells bring staff, residents, and visitors together to see what he is making this time!” Eurico told us “I learnt how to cook by watching my mum when I was younger. I taught myself through lots of practice and a love for food.”
